This late Georgian mansion stands in it's own grounds and has the appearance of a country house hotel yet is just a short walk from the Minster and all major city attractions.
Starting in late 2006 and completed in the autumn of 2007 this listed building underwent a major two million pound refurbishment and extension. The design by Oliver Redfern & David Richard Mellor was to create a concept that looks both forward and back creating an interior for the modern urban traveller, an idyll weekend retreat with all the latest technologies for the business man.
From the beginning the need was recognised to blend the buildings history with contemporary insertions. At its core is a traditional English grand staircase raising up through a magnificent atrium yet with the twist of a bespoke bookcase featuring many interesting historical artefacts associated with Winston Churchill while incorporating today's modern needs of internet stations and coffee bar.
Throughout the remaining public areas there is a comfortable atmosphere which has been achieved with a palette of natural warm hues blended with a mix of classic & contemporary furniture, bespoke carpets and metallic wallpapers.
The standard guestrooms are situated in the new wing with a design approach that is smart and restrained while retaining a welcoming and warm feel. The rooms have a variety of layouts but all feature a mix of contemporary and classic touches set off by unexpected pieces of timeless design such as the Bestlite lamps which lit Winston Churchill's desk during the war years.
One of York's leading boutique hotels, a unique establishment offering 32 stylish bedrooms and suites, the renowned Piano Restaurant and Bar plus private function rooms for all manner of conferences and banqueting events.
